I ♥ Faces - Sun Flare

The theme for Week 46 at I ♥ Faces this week is "Sun Flare".   (The picture can contain sun flare, sun burst, or sun wash). And the guest judge is Becker!  No pressure here.  I have not mastered the art of capturing sun flare on purpose, and the thought of having one of my photos appear before Becker makes the butterflies swarm in my belly!

I had a difficult time choosing between two photos (yeah, I know, it's the story of my life....I'm not good with decisions like this sometimes).  I opted to not post the picture of my kiddo with a sun flare (gasp, the horror!), but you can check it out here.  I did choose to post a picture of the beautiful model Liz who was our "bride" for our day at the Arboretum during the I ♥ Faces Workshop.  Pete Lacker kept giving me tips, like to take my UV filter off my lens.  And I think I let out a little girlie scream when I captured this small sun burst.

Check out the other entries this week here.

I ♥ Faces - Sun Flare - Picture I Choose Not To Enter

The theme for Week 46 at I ♥ Faces is "Sun Flare".  It's always so hard for me to decide which picture to use each week.  Not that I have a plethora of excellent photos.  It's just that I have a hard time making decisions sometimes.  I usually have DH weigh in on what picture I should use.

So this week I went against his choice, and decided not to use a picture of the kiddo as my entry. {gasp} But I thought I would share the one I was considering.  (And you can boo me if you want).  It's also a nice little flash back of her. She was 19 months old and we were playing at a park near our place in Dallas.  She was having a blast running up and down this little hill.

Oh, and my sun flare was not intentional. (I have no clue how I captured it )

I Heart Faces Workshop Recap

I spent all of last week in Dallas.  My trip was two-fold:

  1. Visit with my hubby
  2. Attend the I ♥ Faces Workshop
I've been rather lax in writing a recap of the week for fear my words will not do justice describing what an amazing time I had.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Visit with my hubby
I loved catching up with my hubby, even though we didn't get to spend as much time with each other as I would have liked.  He had a few late nights at work, and I had play dates and girl's night out catching up with friends.
We did manage a nice little dinner at Nick & Sam's, just the two of us. (Remind me to mention our expensive little appetizer some time!)
Most important, he got to spend some quality time with his favorite little redhead.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

2. Attend the I ♥ Faces Workshop

I had been looking forward to the I ♥ Faces workshop for a few months, and let's just say it didn't dissapoint.  What an amazing time.  What an amazing group of photographers.  I'm still smiling thinking about all the fun we had.  I honestly couldn't have been happier with my decision to attend this workshop (and I'm already looking forward to the next workshop, whenever and where ever that might be).

Amy and Angie (co-founders of I ♥ Faces) pulled out all the stops for us, from great speakers and great sponsors to great models and fabulous locations.  I learned so much from photographers Pete Lacker, Amy Karp, and D'Ann Wright.  I ♥ them, really!  And I loved meeting so many of the people who participate in I ♥ Faces each week in person.  Everyone was beyond friendly and funny.  And everyone was so eager to share and help one another out.

The workshop unofficially kicked-off on Thursday evening for those who arrived early in Dallas.  We met Amy & Angie, and sat around chatting photography and our goals.  We also got great little goodie bags with lots of fun stuff from the sponsors of the workshop.  I was a little perplexed though that Canon users got red ribbons on their bags, while Nikon users had no ribbons at all. Hmmmm.

On Friday we set out early to the Dallas Arboretum.  A representative from Tamron was waiting for us the parking lot when we arrived.  Get this - we each got to take a lens for the day to try out!  We all swapped lenses with one another throughout the day so we could try each of them.  Not sure when I would ever had the opportunity to try out so many lenses.  (My head was and still is spinning).

We worked with D'Ann Wright in the morning with lots of kids as our models.  And then in the afternoon we worked with Amy Karp and the beautiful Liz, our bride model.  Both D'Ann and Amy shared tips from posing clients to shooting in natural light and to shooting in manual.  Their guidance throughout the day was invaluable!

Pete also was at the Arboretum, even though he was "officially" scheduled to hang with us on Saturday.  He instantly became my buddy!  He was so willing to share tips of what worked best for him, and he even spent a ton of time helping me try to capture a sun flare.  And with over 35 years experience under his belt, I had the tendency to follow him around, and I was sure he was going to start to think I was stalking him!  At the end of our full day at the Arboretum, I was exhausted!!

Pete Lacker, photographer extraordinaire

On Saturday we talked lots of technical aspects of photography.  Pete critiqued photos that each of us had taken and submitted before the workshop. He provided tips on how we could have improved the photos, or how he would have gone about editing them.  This was such a great session in the morning!  Pete also unfortunately used me as his model for one of his discussions.  Yeah for me sitting in the front row!  (Reminded me that I'd much rather be behind the camera).  Of course, as soon as I blurted out that no one tweet or mention my modeling gig, Amy immediately sent out my picture into the social media world.

Angie, Amy, and Drew then gave us some Photoshop tutorials.  I wish they could have talked even longer on the topic.  During their discussions, Pete also gave me some one-on-one Photoshop lessons!!

We were spoiled in other ways as well.  During lunch, some of the sponsors of the workshop came to chat with us.  We got fun stuff from Sticviews (personalized prints that go anywhere and come off clean).  Arlington Camera and Tamron were also there, allowing us to drool over cameras, lenses, and camera bags.  The later of which I am now a proud new owner (it's red).

On Saturday afternoon, we then headed off on a photo walk through the West End in Dallas.  I convinced hubby and Temperance to come along (kill two birds with one stone by participating in the workshop and spending time with my family).  Temperance actually proved to be a good little model and cooperated long enough for people to get some shots of her too.

Temperance ensuring Pete gets a good group shot.

The workshop truly was amazing.  I had a spectacular time, met and made friends with some great women, and walked away with having learned a ton. And I wish the workshop could have been a week long instead of just a weekend. (Although if it were a week long, I'd definitely be back to drinking caffeine again).

I have SO many pictures I wanted to share and edit!  But alas, my computer does not like the recent installation of Photoshop CS4, and I have yet to learn the tool very well either.

In the meantime, I'm going to share lots of links where you can check out even more pictures from the workshop.
  • To check out the I ♥ Faces Flickr Group with pictures from all the workshop participants, click here.  They are spectacular.  (And you will truly get an idea of just how much fun was had).  Oh, and you also might spot a photo or two of a little redheaded girl that is frequently featured on this here blog.
  • To check out the Whrrl Story about the workshop here
  • To check out the Friday recap of the workshop on the I ♥ Faces blog, click here.  (And one of my pictures made the post!!!)
  • To check out the Saturday recap of the workshop on the I ♥ Faces blog, click here.  You might recognize my lovely mug.
  • If you are a fan of I ♥ Faces on Facebook, you can check out some of the photos Amy & Angie took here.

Whew!  That was one long post.  Hope it was evident that I really enjoyed myself during the workshop!

I ♥ Faces - Autumn Beauty

I had a fabulous time at the I ♥ Faces Workshop this past weekend in Dallas!  I will be posting a full re-cap of the weekend soon!  In the meantime, let's talk about the theme for this week.

The theme for Week 45 at I ♥ Faces this week is "Autumn Beauty".  Fall is my absolute favorite season!  So I had many photos that captured someone (namely by kiddo) surrounded by the beautiful colors of autumn.  The challenge came in picking my favorite photo to enter for the week!

Did I mention I love fall?  Well, I especially love fall in Michigan.  This is not the traditional head-on picture I usually submit, but I love the colors.  And I love to think about what was going through her head as she was getting ready to throw her handful of leaves.

Make sure to check out all the other beautiful fall entries this week here.

Thursday Random Ramblings

I truly can't believe it's already Thursday!  The week is flying by.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm having a great time visiting friends in Dallas.  My 'schedule' this week has been so busy with date night, play dates, girl's night out, lunch dates, more play dates, a mom event, a quick little photo session for a friend, and then the upcoming big I Heart Faces Workshop.  I haven't had as much time to spend with DH as I would like, but we'll get to catch up the week of Thanksgiving.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I do feel a bit guilty about missing out on Kindermusik, gymnastics, and my Photoshop class while I am gone this week, but I know I will get over it!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We had our family holiday pictures taken with my favorite friend and photographer, Cindi from Selah Studios.  She was gracious enough to drive over to Dallas for our session.  I'm super excited to see how the pictures turned out.  And I'm just as excited that Cindi and her family got their referral and will be meeting baby Sam in the New Year!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On another photography note, I had entered a picture in the I Heart Faces weekly contest several months back.  It was for the Blurb Photo book contest.  My picture was selected to appear in the book, and the book is now available for purchase!  I already ordered mine.  I can't wait for it to come in, and I loved looking through the pages seeing so many names and faces of bloggers I've become friends with.  Want to check out what the book looks like?  Sure you do, click here.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Temperance has been a true toddler this week.  No naps. Going to bed way too late.  Mini meltdowns.  She's getting her way because I just can't see letting her have tantrums knowing there are people in the hotel rooms on either side of us.  Next week back at home will be another long week, attempting to get her to adjust to a "normal" schedule in addition to her big girl bed.  Valium anyone?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm checking Twitter constantly on my iPhone to check up on Kameron.  She's due with her little baby girl any day now!  Sending her lots of happy thoughts for a fast and easy delivery.  This is her second, and she's going all-natural again.  She's my hero.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, I need to get the kiddo dressed and head down to the hotel breakfast before it's over.
I Heart Faces - Thankfulness
The theme for Week 44 over at I ♥ Faces this week is "My Story In Photos: Thankfulness".   This is a non-competition week (i.e. no judge) since the wonderful ladies of I ♥ Faces  are preparing for the first ever I ♥ Faces Photography Workshop - which I am very excited to be attending!
This should be a post about what I am most thankful for, and trust me, I have a mile long list I could share.  Take for example my husband and daughter, my siblings, my mom and mother-in-law, our health and the fact we have health insurance, we have food on our table and clothes on our back.  I'm so thankful for supportive family and friends.  I'm thankful my "needs" are met, and so many of my "wants" too.
All that said, I'm choosing to keep it super simple this week (I still have cleaning and laundry and packing to do).  So I thought I'd take a few lines from one of my favorite Darius Rucker songs - Alright - to show just a smidgen of the things I'm thankful for.
Queue music.  Commence top-tapping and finger snapping.
Cause I've got a roof over my head,
the woman I love laying in my bed
And it's alright, alright
I've got shoes under my feet
Forever in her eyes staring back at me
And it's alright, alright
And I've got all I need
And it's alright by me
What are you most thankful for?  Check out some of the other entries this week here.
